Black History Month

Candice
August - 2025

Black History Month, celebrated every February in the United States and Canada, has its roots in the early 20th century. The celebration began as "Negro History Week" in 1926, founded by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). Woodson chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14), two figures significant to African American history.

The week grew in popularity, and in 1976, during the nation’s bicentennial, it was expanded to a month-long celebration. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, urging Americans to honor the contributions of African Americans to the nation's history. Since then, every February, Black History Month has served as a time to reflect on and celebrate the achievements and impact of Black individuals and communities in shaping history, while also highlighting the ongoing struggles for racial equality.
